Tierklinik Lüsche

Dr. Tim Steinberg

For years, equine dentistry has been looking for a solution to permanently fill an empty tooth socket after a molar tooth has been extracted. Especially in young horses, the aim is to prevent the neighboring molars from tilting into the empty tooth socket. Since I have been involved in equine dentistry, I have used various methods and materials as temporaries (replacement teeth, implants) with inadequate results.
My wish was to be able to produce replacement teeth individually as in human dentistry with the help of an intraoral scanner and a 3D printer.
The company r3volutionD developed the innovative software and process and we have now succeeded in producing a 3D printed tooth for the horse. For one year now we have been able to fill the tooth gaps with a 3D printed tooth. The results and experiences are very pleasing and promising.

Frequently asked questions
What do I need to 3D print a dental implant?

All you need to get started with 3D printing dental implants is our 3D print starter kit which you can find in our online shop. Using our 3D scanning app r3DPhoto you can digitalise the extracted tooth to be 3D printed and with our r3Dent web app you can access the digital tooth in order to post-process the tooth and prepare the model for 3D printing.

Do I need to have technical knowledge about 3D printers?

No. The process of 3D printing is really simple and easy to understand with the help of our tutorial video and documentation. In addition, the printer itself and our starter kit come with a short and simple manual to be set up in just a couple of minutes. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

What material do you use for the 3D printed dental implant?

We use a plant-based UV resin. This material is made from soybean oil and biodegradable. Abrasion Tests with the ZWT have shown strong material properties in comparison to alternative materials and a real horse tooth. Case studies on horses with the Tierklinik Lüsche have shown that the teeth are very well tolerated and no adverse reaction has been observed. The material through RoHS and REACH testing, complied with EN 71-3:2013 safety standard.

How do you fixate the 3D printed dental implant?

The 3D printed dental implant can be inserted in the gap of the extracted tooth and will automatically be fixated by the adjacent teeth keeping the dental implant in place. Sometimes grinding parts of the 3D printed dental implant can help with insertion and the perfect fit.

Do you need to change the 3D printed dental implant?

As long as the tooth does not fall out or cause problems in any way, the dental implant does not need to be changed. The dental implant can be removed briefly to clean the wound cavity and then be reinserted.
